ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Michael Spencer Jones is a British art photographer who rose to prominence in the 1990s amid the British music scene’s rock’n’roll renaissance. Spencer Jones’s iconic imagery of the decade’s leading artists helped shape the cultural cachet of an extraordinary era.

In 1993 Spencer Jones met Oasis for the first time, embarking on a period of artistic collaboration which spanned several years and generated the covers of the band’s first three albums and 12 of their singles. While creating the epochal artwork that remains imprinted on a generation of fans, the photographer also documented the Gallaghers’ rise to stratospheric fame through candid, intimate imagery.

“…asking the lead singer of a band, to lay motionless on the floor with their eyes closed for the cover of their debut album is a huge ask. In fact, no band had ever done such a thing on an album cover before, so there was a certain degree of unchartered territory and risk involved.” MSJ on shooting the cover to Definitely Maybe.

“I had on the previous Tuesday been with Oasis in Newcastle, which had resulted in a riot when a fan had invaded the stage and gashed Noel above the eye with a heavy signet ring, enough to have put Noel in hospital for a couple of hours, but not before both he and Liam had administered summary punishment to the offender in the photographers’ pit, to the astonishment of onlookers.” MSJ
